Urman Dictionary

falmori

noun

A major transition that leaves one feeling like a different or reborn person.

It’s strange to think back to who I was in high school. I’ve been through falmori so many times since then: switching schools, switching back, graduating, heading off to college - it goes on. I’ve been so many different people.

austonos

noun

A desire to maintain continuity for a prior self who no longer exists.

A long time ago, I was visiting home from college and I fired up my old Super Nintendo. I found an in-progress save file for Earthbound, maybe halfway through the game, that I hadn’t touched in a couple of years. I opened it up and poked around to see where I was and what I was doing, but a feeling of austonos stopped me from playing further or overwriting the save. It was as if I thought High School Dan was somehow going to come back to finish his game and would be upset to find it disturbed.

flyby

noun

A maneuver to surreptitiously check whether one’s fly is open.

Suddenly unsure whether he’d adequately rearranged himself upon exiting the bathroom, Allen waited for Melika to pause in their conversation and look the other way and then executed a quick flyby. Thankfully, he was in the clear.

drenchdash

verb

To run through the rain because one has neglected to prepare protective gear.

Looking out the office window into the London rain, most of the people Marina saw were strolling casually in their raincoats or under their umbrellas. She couldn’t help but be amused at the two men in shirtsleeves drenchdashing down the street toward the shelter of their own office.

friendspackle

noun

Shared activity undertaken when friends are apart in order to maintain the friendship.

Hugo and Ruben headed to different cities after graduating college. To make sure they would still have things to talk about, they decided to use television shows as friendspackle - they watched through Breaking Bad at the same rate and discussed the episodes as they went.

durataste

noun

The quality that allows a food to keep well and be satisfying as leftovers.

Meatloaf has a lot of durataste. So does pizza, which is what leads to cold pizza comfort. Sandwiches tend to have almost no durataste since the bread either gets soggy or goes stale, so they tend to be ephemelicious.

productivity hangover

noun phrase

A period after a burst of activity when one’s instinct is not to return to normal levels but to drop to near-zero in order to recover.

On slow days, Ismael could handle the low-but-steady flow of customers all day with no problem. But on days with a lunch rush, when things calmed down again around 2:00 he had a harsh productivity hangover and found it very difficult to deal with even the normal levels.

tauntchime

noun

A sound played when shutting down, locking, or putting into standby a computer or gadget, that reminds the user that they have forgotten to mute the device.

Ugh, I hate the Windows shutdown sound when I turn off my laptop. It’s such a tauntchime; now I have to turn the thing back on to mute it or when I turn it on later I’ll have aural leakage.

wascarn

noun

Frustration at someone else having a limited resource that you believe you could put to better use.

I used to feel a lot of wascarn at the fact that danurman.com is owned by someone who isn’t even named Dan Urman. But he’s been using it consistently for his real estate business for at least a decade and a half, periodically updating it, so it’s hard to be too upset anymore.

endivo

adjective

Characterized by an openness about one’s creative output.

Ossgemmas are only possible if the creator is endivo.

I’ve always said that if you want to get better at something, do it in public. To be a better writer, you need practice, but it’ll be much more effective if you’re endivo about it. Writing every day is good - blogging every day is better!

implimate

verb

To communicate successfully despite not finding the right words.

“It made me so angry,” said Aina. “Well, not exactly angry I guess. It was more like disappointment? But in a way where I wasn’t really surprised - I guess it’s more of a sadness? Well, you know what I mean."
Magdalene nodded vigorously, “Yes, it’s just like with Tamara last week."
“Exactly!” said Aina, laughing. “I’m so glad we’re close enough to implimate like that. You get me better than anyone.”

shamire

verb

To feign a preference in order to fit in.

Can be the result of avoiding a stereotrap.

“Okay, what should we watch? It looks like we have only two DVDs - The Rock and Sleeping Beauty,” Bob asked the group.
Raj swallowed. “The Rock, of course,” he shamired.

stereotrap

noun

An action or choice that one is disinclined from specifically because it reinforces a stereotype.

The study group had been listening to Ludek’s music in the background for a while, and when his chosen album finished, he picked Giorgia to DJ next. She scrolled through her mp3s, mindful of the fact that she was already seen as a bit of an otaku. For a moment she considered the JPop album which she always listened to when studying alone. In this crowd, though, it was a stereotrap, and she wasn’t quite secure enough in her friendship with this group to take that particular social risk. She settled on a Jack Johnson album instead, hoping that was neutral enough to send no particular message.

brainsprinkle

“How’s this for a band name? ‘Ultrabear.’ Came to me in a brainsprinkle last night.”

twidment

noun

A span of time long enough to get bored in but too short to do anything significant with.

Claudius finished a final pass on his latest design and sent it off to the implementation team. He glanced at the clock to see how much time he had left before he had to leave to meet his cousin for lunch - only twenty minutes. Merely a twidment; certainly not enough time to dive in and start the next design. Oh well, nothing for it - he sighed and opened a browser tab to Facebook.

memetility

noun

The expressive or creative power of a meme.

Hail Hydra was a short-lived meme, but it had high memetility - it could be used to recontextualize many different situations, turning each into a new story. By contrast, doge is a much more widespread meme but with much lower memetility. All you can do with it is wrap it around a couple of nouns and adjectives, but it doesn’t actually express or change much of anything.

aural leakage

noun phrase

An accidental and embarrassing sharing of music or other audio.

Leni was listing to her music and generally having a great time, until she accidentally pulled her headphones right out of their jack, and ABBA began blaring out of her laptop speakers. Trying to ignore the stares from the other coffee shop patrons, she scrambled to hit the mute button and put an end to the aural leakage.

nokama

noun

A longing to belong to a tightly-knit group.

After leaving behind a great group of friends at her old school, Elena was having trouble fitting in at her new one. This gave her a strong nokama, so she resolved to join as many extracurricular clubs and teams as she could fit into her schedule in hopes of finding a new circle to be part of.

nostrope

noun

A desire to do something because of how it used to make one feel.

Jeremy had played a lot of dungeon crawlers growing up, as an effective way to feel like an adventurous explorer from the limits of his own bedroom. When Diablo III came out he found himself with a nostrope to pick it up and try to recapture the old magic.

slop fright

noun phrase
